Sad day for my sand shifter

I came home from work today and was so happy that my tunze ATO was on the living room table wait for me. I proceeded to install the ATO and was working around the area of my sump where all my pumps where. Then that's when I said it. My sand shifter was stuck in the intake if my mag 3 that I used to run my skimmer. I pulled it out and it was stiff like a rock

that sucks man, that happened to a peppermint shrimp of mine that made it to the sump

I still do t understand how it could have gone into that chamber if my sump. I built my cube with the sump built into the back of the tank. I also have the whole top part of the sump covered up with black 1/4" acrylic to prevent light front coming in. The only place I can think of it entering is the overflow. But then it has to travel through 12" of filter floss and then a jungle of cheato in the 2nd chamber before it can enter the return chamber where all the pumps are. I'm at a lost for words
