Saltwater Mixing Station Question

Hello peeps! So I just bought 2 brute 44 gallon trash cans. I will be filling the top one with water from my RODI then emptying it to the bottom one to add salt. I want to be able to have some sort of marker inside the trash can so I can know how much water is in there at the moment. Is there anything can I can safely mark the inside of the trash can with? Only thing I can think of at the moment is to simply score the inside with a knife.

Sharpie. Once sharpie ink is fully dry it is non-toxic.

Yep, Sharpie. I used to price my corals on PVC rings marked with Sharpie.
