I've had my current system running for about 7 years or so. I think its about time I at least attempt to syphon my sand bed. I have no clue how to do it. Any suggestions??

SLOW! SLOW! SLOWWWWW!

I would recommended a little bit at a time. Maybe a few cups with every water change. You definitely don't wanna disturb too much and release whatever has been building up in there.

This is less about siphoning (go slow either way) and more about rinsing but may be useful for you in the future

Have you been maintaining the sand bed by vacuuming it regularly? That is the big question.

If you have, and your water quality is good, there's no need to remove it and replace it. Most people need to top it off occasionally for sand lost during vacuuming.

If you have not vacuumed it, you have a ticking time bomb.
