Is it possible to recycle nitrate-laden old sand or is the pH buffering capacity ruined? I'm assuming I need to throw it away and not go near it again, since it has given me so much grief, but I was wondering what would happen if I sun dried it and baked it in the oven.

New carbonate sand is one of the least expensive things one can buy in this hobby. Why cut corners?

I know you're right. It's not the expense....it's the principle of BUYING SAND which is abundant in megaton quantities in the earth. Kind of like how I can't believe pet stores sell rocks and driftwood and people actually buy them.......I'm going to suck it up and throw it away........

You can bleach it and then rinse it. It's almost more trouble than you will save though. It will take you atleast 2 hours to get it clean and then another couple days to let it dry out. I know atleast one sponsor is having a sale on live sand.
