Does anyone here have experiences with Sand sifting Sea Stars? My wife wants one but there seems to be a extreme divide between them being great and horrible

I have one in my sump. Not in my display because I don’t want him to devour all the microorganisms in my sandbed. He gets to eat all the slims in my sump.

Been in the sump for about 3month with one big red leg hermit crab.

I have never heard anyone say they are horrible. The only downside is if you have a small tank they can eat all the "stuff" in the sand and then stave to death.

They work great for mixing up the sand, and Ive always had at least one.

What size tank would everyone recommend? I went with "special grade" sand in my current tank and while I appreciate it staying in place, that also means it collects diatoms, coralline, and aiptasia. I'd hate for one to starve though.

I have one (I think it's still around) I've not seen him for a while but he's almost always been under the sand.. So if you're planning to see them... don't count on it.. I don't know where it's at or if it's still in there... but I haven't found any parts or dead one. ha!
