what can i add to my tank to keep the brown off the top of the sand 10 gallon tank so i cant hold anything real big thanks for any help

If its a new tank then time is all you need. The brown is probably Diatom algae. It will run its cycle..... Brown, green then red it the typical order algae grows

1) increase water flow, if possible
2) decrease lighting cycle
2) decrease food/nutrients

All these helped when I had excessive diatom bloom.

Dakota has a good point... if your tank is not yet established (less than 1-1.5years old) then you may not have enough life in the sandbed to support cleaners (ie stars, certian snails, sand sifting fish, etc).
