Is it better to get sand local or online? And please let me know a couple places to check out rather local or online. thank you guys

Nemo Aquarium has 20lb bags for $20 i think. plus the 10% discount for being a supporting member.

Thank you guys, I'll check them both out. My next question, if I plan on having done gobbies or blennies should I do 3 or 4 inches of sand?

Any of the local stores can order whatever color you like. I've always used CaribSea for no other reason than that seems to be the most popular. If you think you like one type but it's not in stock make sure to order it. The substrate is something you'll always be looking at so get exactly what you want.

Thank you, that's great to know about then being able to order.

I agree. I always try to support my LFS when I am able. At the same time, I always want the best deal... or at least not to pay too much extra as I don’t mind if I’m paying 50 cents extra, for example.

Sand, whether online or in an LFS, is one of the products that is always comparable. So I support getting it from them. I use Carib-sea ‘special grade’ now, and their ‘oolite’ in my last tank, which was pretty but very hard to work with.

As for which type you choose, beware: “Fish Safe” does not mean “Reef Safe”. Carib-Sea brands many of their sands as Fish Safe, but these contain silicates that will kill all corals and nems within 24 hours. Unfortunately, one of my good friends made this mistake and lost about $100 in new frags each week for a couple months before he was able to identify the issue.
