I have a client in north Georgia with a semi-reef tank that's been up for a couple years. He has a few colonies of really large aptaisia, and there are some other corals in the tank as well.

Someone mentioned why a person WOULD want to have aptaisia in their tank... I am all ears. Why would this be a good idea?

Dave,
Your client may not know any better. I've read threads where unsuspecting newbies get sold rocks with aptasia on them like they are a coral.

There was an LFS (no longer in business) that sold a guy an aiptasia for $8. Granted the guy asked how much it was when he saw it, but the LFS could have told him the truth instead or soaking him.

I have two friends that saw it go down... one says the LFS employee said, "Man, you don't want that", the other says he just shot him a price.

Well maybe not a coral but they are an anemone.:) I guess we deem them a nuisance. If they were 10 different neon colors we would treasure them then.

10 years ago I was knowingly sold an Aiptasia (before I knew what a nuisance it was) on a nice piece of rock.

And this by someone who, nowadays, is well respected in the trade and he publishes articles in magazines.

I said, "Oh look, it has a little anemone on it!" and he said, "Yep, free bonus." No word of a lie.

Took me a few weeks to realize that this wasn't a welcome addition - once it divided I did some research. Fortunately I got a Peppermint Shrimp that got rid of both of them PDQ.

So yes, it happens, unfortunately.

I was never deliberately sold one, but when I was a newbie and they started popping up,
I was very excited. I used to spot feed them with a syringe. I had one that was at least 3 inches. Lol
I think it took about a year before I found out what a pest they were. At which point, I should
have bought stock in aptaisa-x. :( live and learn. Lol

just how big an old aptaisia are you talking about?

I don't know how old they were, but these guys were 2-3 inch heads. I mean, don't get me wrong... if I didn't know that they sting corals and can take over a tank, I would say they had a fantastic display there.
