I am transferring from a 10G to a 40G and I’m not sure the best way to go about it. I’ve done some research but I’ve read mixed opinions on how to do it.

Should I start fresh with brand new live sand and rock for a new cycle and then transfer?
Or what are some options for a better way?

I would say it depends what your goals are and what condition your current tank is in. If it's loaded with some kind of pest you'd like to get rid of, then a fresh cycle with careful dipping of any corals may be in order. This will completely reset the clock on achieving a mature reef though.

If you're fine with whatever is currently in the 10g, then you can just transfer everything over, except maybe the sand (depending how filthy it is).

I would setup the 40gal and transfer the 10gal once 40gallon goes thru nitrogen cycle at least. You can use little bit if your 10gallob stuff to seed your 40gal and transfer once it’s ready. And only transfer what you want. Or you can transfer instantly. That’s how most forks do.
