Setting Up a Frag Tank!

I will be moving my tank soon when I move. I will be setting up a frag tank in the process. This system will be separate from my display tank. I am doing this because my current system was taken over by aiptasia. I'm thinking of using a 29 gallon bio cube, 40 gallon breeder, or 20 gallon long as a frag tank. Also thinking of using led lighting. I'm looking for something to do the job but not break the bank. I've heard good things about the reefbreeders lights.

A few questions for everyone. Would you build in a sump and refuge into a frag tank? Would you recommend a different led fixture? Do you have a low maintenance and cost efficient frag tank to suggest?

Thank you! And happy reefing?

I would go with the 40b or the 20 long. Petco has their $1 per gallon sale going on right now, so that could save you a few bucks. I think a sump on any tank is a good idea and I would probably skip the refugium.

+1

Don't use the biocube you will have to much wasted space.

Yes on the sump. More space, more water, more stability. Plus you can keep equipment out of the tank so you can have as much grow space as possible.

Reefbreeders are a great choice for leds. However in a frag tank you want your corals to grow as fast as possible. If I were you I would get a used MH setup or some T5s.

Hope that helps.

I definitely don't want to use the biocube then. So it's between a 20 long or 40 breeder. Probably more inclined to go with a 20 long. Thanks for the heads up on $1/gallon at Petco. I've capitalized on that deal before. So with a 20 long tank, would you go with a 10 gallon sump? And if so, how would you design a 10 gallon sump?

I understand that a used MH or T5s would grow faster. However, I think I would sacrifice the growth rate to avoid changing bulbs and the high energy demands of a MH. I'll look more into the Reefbreeders, but what type of LED fixture would people recommend for a 20 long frag tank?

Also on amazon they have awesome frag trees you can add ingot one for Xmas and I love it and it looks really nice :)

I would probably go with another 20 underneath it. It's going to be tough to get all your equipment into a chambered 10 gallon.

If you're doing it on a budget, then ReefBreeders / Evergrow would be my recommendation.

Very true. A 20 would probably be more functional. Would you just have a two compartment sump? One being the drain with a skimmer? The other compartment hosting the return pump?
