Happy hump day everyone! Has anyone played around with shielding the body of their protein skimmer from light spill over from their refugium? Or light in general? I run a Red Sea RSK-600 and absolutely love the thing. However, there is a beam of light that spills out from my refugium’s H380 and that has let a landing strip of green try to grow where it hits the skimmer. I already have a shroud on the Kessil that blocks unnecessary light from going anywhere but onto the refugium. The issue is the weir that the water spills over from the refugium is leaking light.

I had picked up black pvc tape when I plumbed the tank, but somehow forgot to use it for wrapping the skimmer. Now I really don’t want to try and clean the outside of the skimmer enough to get it to actually stick and stay put. Has anyone found an off the shelf hack for this? Or know of something I can drop onto the 3d printer? I’ve got a spool of PETG itching to be used. I’m excited to see what the MacGyvers of this group have came up with!

I saw those on Google, but I’ve already solved that issue of the light illuminating a wider area with a shroud I printed for the Kessil. Now I’m actually looking to see if someone has found a clean way to make a shroud specifically for the skimmer itself to handle light that comes from under the top bracing of the sump.

Here are two pictures to hopefully help show what I mean. The first shows the light and how I’ve got the beam narrowed to only hit the sump area. The second those the hole between the top of the sump and the weir where my narrow light is reflecting out. My backup plan is to make a piece that will clip onto the top of the sump and extend down into the skimmer chamber. I’d still prefer a skimmer specific solution though.
