Just about to get water in my new set up and just wanted some feedback.

First of all becuase i know it will come up... the sump is bigger than the tank becuase i decided to down grade my display due to my income and the skimmer i had planed on useing on the larger tank as well so thats why its so over kill..

The display is a 40 breeder and the sump is a 75g tank. After sand and rock I plan on haveing around 100 gallons. The 40 breeder has a glass-holes.com 300gph overflow kit installed and im running a mag 5 for the return. Im plannin on throwing in an MP-20 for flow as well, so you guys think its really all that big a deal that the total water volmue is only going through the sump 3 times an hour? I figgure maybe it will have a nice caulm flow for the fuge. But im sure there will be some of you that say thats not needed..

And now for my SKIMMER.. Im running a MRC MR-2 with a pcx-55... ive been reading up on "overskimming" and still dont know if i agree that its a bad thing.. but eitherway i figgure only running 300gph through the sump and the skimmer getting over 1000gph... ill have some killlllerrrrr contact time in there!

what do you guys think?

I would say at least run a mag 7 or maybe even a mag 9 due to the large water displacement. I run a mag7 on my 10g frag tank with a proclear 75 sump but the flow is so good a powerhead isn't even needed.

You may be ok with how you have it since your relying on the mp-20 for flow. As long as your skimmer can keep up with the waste being produced you should be ok.

Ive seen it happen in a lot of tanks where they have a large setup like yours but because the flow is such a low rate going from the tank to the sump that it doesn't create enough of a flow to pull waste out of display into the sump then renders the point of having a sump almost pointless

It occurs to me that if you are draining 300 gph and returning 500 gph you are going to have a problem.

id run the mag 7 for sure if my overflow could handle it.
