I agree, I have never had that problem before...

Agreed, but it depends on design, flows, etc. I have seen this occur, so I metioned it.

grouper therapy;418813 wrote: You can plumb a bypass (safety drain ) at the point that the drain feeds the skimmer. just install a p-trap or s- trap near the skimmer inlet and if something obstructs the drain you have a safety check in place. I think it will work fine and is an economical way to feed a skimmer. Direct intake or the dirty water!!

Trying this again...
I have mine plumbed this way and I have had no problems.

As far as big bubbles entering the foam head That is a legitimate concern but would also depend on your skimmer design as well baffles,.bubble plates etc. Good point though.

I followed Dawg's approach when i was setting up the 110 recirc and it turned out great. I just added a gate valve to the return which was an asbolute pain plumbing but in the end was def worth it...

Those of you who have it directly plumbed from the overflow...how much more cleaning is needed? I only break my skimmer down once every 6 months to clean them. Would this need to change?

While I really wanted the recirc skimmer, my future sump is only a 10G and will not have room for it. So I bought the 2009 Reef Octopus Extreme Series EXT-160. Should be plenty for a 50G setup!

I got it from Salty Supply in FL, 10% off, and only $268 shipped. Not too bad. No one around here carries anything worth a ****...

Great choice on the skimmer, I love my octopus and have used other more expensive skimmers rated around the same. The octo pulled twice as much out and gave me less problems. You are correct though that the recirc probably would not have fit in that small of a sump. Not because of the maxijet though as a matter of fact my maxijet sits right up under my recirc pump and adds absolutly nothing to the footprint.

Yeah I had it in my head that it was a 20 g sump. When I found out is was a 10 I realized thi swas my only option. Still a good one though!

One more thought, if you hook directly to the skimmer from the overflow, what if you have a little fish go for a ride? Like a neon goby? Sushi anyone?

If you run a MJ out of the sump, doubt that would happen.

LOL Good point!

So I still don;t have my skimmer. I had to file a paypal claim with the company I bought it from almost 2 weeks ago!

Bought one from BRS last night. Hope it's here soon!
