skimmer question

I have a reef octopus skimmer with a pinwheel, and was wondering if anyone had the same issue as i am.. I check my skimmer as well as all my other components daily. Twice now i have noticed my skimmer, acting werid. The pumps are still pumping water however the wire is just spinning in a cyclone patern minus the bubbles. I have to adjust the choke pipe a "hairs" width (and i do mean a very marginal amount) to get it to recreate the bubble pattern. In both cases the bubble lvl or water skimmer lvls were set at differnt levels.

but why does it do this randomly? lose all the bublbes and just spin water?
