Okay, here goes a real newb question. I am looking at in sump skimmers, no model in particular but am curious about the way they function. I know what they do once water is in there but more curious on how they work.

Take the octopus nwb 150. I see a chamber, a pump, tubes and a knob. How does the water get in, how does it get out? Does it need an additional pump if sitting in a sump? And what is the red knob for?

Thanks

the pump pumps water and chops up air pushing it in through the skimmer body the water exits through the outlet near the red knob the red knob is to dial the skimmer (increase/decrease) the water flow and the pump that comes with it is all you need i run the reef octopus 3000 internal skims great

Yep. The red knob is a gate valve on the output side. Closing it more will restrict the EXIT of water, making the water level (and by default the foam level) rise in the skimmer.
The pump draws water in and pumps it (with air through the venturi) into the skimmer body. It simply leaves a hole in the side to exit the skimmer, the tubes are there to route this output water to where you want it.
