Skimmer Question

Hello,

I am new to the site and I have a Skimmer question. I have a 45 gallon tank, and due to a logistical miscalculation I do not have enough room to hang a skimmer to the back of the tank. Is there a recommended Skimmer that can sit under the tank in the cabinet similar to how a canister filter operates?

Also, I recently changed from a cheap light that came with the aquarium to a Nova Extreme Pro T5 light. For about a week some of my LR began turning white. Is this a normal reaction to a new light or could it have been a water quality issue? The color is now coming back with a much deeper purple than before so I am guessing whatever the problem was is now resolved.

This hobby is addicting like Crack, but much more expensive.

Thanks in advance for any advice

Since skimmers rely on injection of air and then that air being able to escape, dragging goop along with it, it's not really possible to have a skimmer that works like a canister filter. The only reason a canister filter doesn't make a flood is that it's sealed. You could hang a skimmer on the side of the aquarium. No law against that.

The reaction you saw was normal for a large lighting upgrade. Generally, once you get livestock, a lighting upgrade should be done gradually by either reducing the initial intensity of the light or the photo period and then gradually increasing it over several days to the new intensity.

I'd say that the hobby is less dangerous than crack, but if you're married, there's the chance your spouse may eventually rub you out.

Well I finally got off my lazy butt and repositioned my tank. I removed 10 gallons and was able to slide the left side out. It actually was not that bad to move. I now have plenty of room to hang a skimmer on the back. Saltwater city has a CoralLife Super Skimmer 125. Is this a decent Skimmer?

Is there a good shop around that has a good selection of aquarium Gear (Filters, Skimmers, Lights)? The only place I have seen was Petsmart/Petco, but for the most part they sell only the low end equipment.

I have not used it, but from what people say, the Coralife skimmers are good budget choices. I do remember some posts about problems with excess bubbles in the tank with them, but you'd want to confirm that.

This is also a good deal on a great HOB skimmer:

It has had many great reviews, and it is what I am currently running.

I actually went out and bought the Remora Pro at lunch before I saw these posts today. I was talking to the guy at Optimum aquarium and it was what he recommended. I guess I need to hurry up and buy a membership so I can enjoy all the sponsor discounts.

Thanks again for the help. I got to go and hook this thing up.
