My 90 build is nearing completion... wiring done... plumbing done... water in tank... but I can't tame my skimmer!

The skimmer is a used MSX-160. Just turned it on about an hour ago and it is skimming very wet. I have the adjustment "open" all the way. Any movement to move the adjustment toward "closed" only makes it worse. As you can see from the picture I have foam going into the collection cup, and a steady stream of water coming out of the collection cup drain.

I am not sure if any mods were made to the impeller... and I have nothing connected to the intake of the SK-2500 pump. Is is setting in 11" of water.

The skimmer hasn't been used in several months... not sure if a break in period will help.

Any thoughts?

Might need to sit higher in the water. I think a lot of skimmers have recommended depths of around 9-10"

How deep is the water? It might just be the perspective, but it looks as if the sump is too shallow. THe operating depth for that skimmer is 8-10". Can you decrease the amount of incoming air?

Let me know if you figure it out. I tried to use a Sicce 2500 to upgrade my MRC skimmer which is basically the same design as yours and the Octopus version. I couldn't get it to not overflow the collection cup. Used both the purple pinwheel and mesh mod. Also lowered the height of drain pipe to reduce back pressure. It sits in about 9" of water. No luck. I'm sure there is a way to get it to work. A lot of these skimmers have been sold with the Sicce pump.

Anyone need a slightly used Sicce PSK 2500 with pinwheel and mesh wheel?

Can you just grab it an hold it a couple of inches higher in the water and see if the stream from the collection cup stops (should do so almost immediately)? If it does, sounds like you need to make a note of how high you had to lift it to make it stop, and build you a stand a tiny bit taller than that. That way, you should be able to have a little wiggle room with the adjustment.

Problem seems to have resolved itself... I let it run overnight and now it's fully adjustable and skimming like a champ!

Why fix today what fixes itself tomorrow :yay:

I wish my tank went by that motto. Just noticed you're from Cumming too....lots of members up here now.
