Snowy Tank?

The 90 that I moved from my apt to my brothers house has a ton of little particles floating around. Its not sand because I turned off the Vortechs and they were still everywhere.

I did a WC and they were still floating around.

Also, as for filtration i used to have a 30g long hooked up to this system as a fuge with LR, sand, and Cheato. I had a reactor hooked up to it as well that ran carbon and purigen.

The tank right now has none of that. Im guessing this is the reason for the snow effect?????

I want to build a little fuge out of acrylic for the sump and place it in the skimmer compartment but Im not sure what the best way to place it would be.

The sump is one of these:

The skimmer takes up most of that middle compartment but Id like to build a little "room/compartment" at least for some cheato and rubble rock. Then Ill put media in filter bags and hang those in the sump.

Do you guys think this would help? Any better suggestions? I though about a HOB fuge but he really doesnt have room for one of these.

On a side note, I have noticed is that the salt creep in the sump area is way worse than it was at my apt. The avg. temp is running a bit higher which leads me to think more evap is going on and thats probably the reason for that. Any ideas?

Pic?? kinda sounds like calc and alk precipitated? What are those levels?

no pic available but just imagine sand particles floating around. even if i tried to take a pic the camera wouldn't pick it up.

i hadn't thought about that...it could be just that.

he has been dosing 2 part and now that I think about it thats a probable cause. Ill have to check the levels next time I head over there.

If that is the case, whats the remedy.....just letting the levels settle back down naturally? The corals and everything in the tank look great?

Sounds like either a chemical precipitated or maybe something spawned? Either way, some filter floss in a canister filter or the like would help remove it.

If its the chemical thing that means its just temporary and that I can deal with. If its just particle matter I need a more permanent solution hence the addition to the sump....im just not too sure something so small would make much of a difference????

+1 on chemical precipitated... I have dosed my tank with Alk and Ph buffer before, and it had a similar effect. In my case, the snowy look dissipated in a couple of days.

Just a thought... do you have a Macro algae in the fuge, if so, what kind?

Nope, not right now. Thats what I was getting at. There is absolutely no mechanical nor biological filtration in that tank right now other than whats in the display and the skimmer.

The sump has no carbon or macro algaes. Thats why I want to build that little box.

You mention Purigen.

Sure a small amount could not have escaped the filter bag?

If it's biological mater floating around (organic debris) a UV Sterilizer will go a long way to help clear it up.

No...I have never used Purigen since I moved the tank....I only used it when I had the 30L fuge set up.

Thats another thing that he doesnt have that I used to use on it, the UV sterilizer. But Im one of the ones that doubted the effectiveness of it to begin with.

not chunky, more granular.......

Im sure a filter sock would help, but I need a more permanent solution. My brother wont be changing out filter socks as often as is needed.

ok..took some measurements today all w/ Salifert kits:

Cal: 420
Mag: 1420
Alk: 5.8 (very low)

Did a 50% water change:
Cal: 440
Mag:1440
Alk: 8.0

Im not sure why the alk dropped especially with the dosing of two part, but none of these reading seems to suggest precipitation right???
