So something stung the heck out of me

Not exactly reef related but I'm in Florida at St augustine. I was swimming waist deep in a not so popular beach. All of a sudden I felt some sharp burning feeling on my.... we'll say thigh. A few seconds later after I ran out the water a large reddish purple spot was starting to show up. It hasn't really stopped stinging and is a large hive/ welt. Couldn't have been a jellyfish? It's a round 3" spot. Hopefully some of you savvy saltwater people have an idea.
 
I've been lit up by jelly fish, on several occasions, on various beaches around Florida and South Carolina... Usually it's with their trolling tentacles and you can see the sting line through the middle, but sometimes it comes out as one big welt if you just catch the end of the tentacle, or he was mostly closed up when you hit him.
 
I asked a lifeguard about it and he said it was most likely a man of war that was partially closed when it stung. I have 3 lines
