Economy got you down but you're tired of that loud drain and skimmer.

Cut the sides out of a straight sided 2 liter bottle and roll it up, you got yourself a pipe extension.
Cut the top off of a water bottle, cut a hole in the side and you've got a 90 degree elbow to redirect that skimmer outlet.

you could raise your water level also it will quiet the skimmer and drain your about 5'' to low for that skimmer bet your gate valve is 90% closed

HA JB was telling me about this earlier! I thought he was joking but that's awesome! Hey to each his own, if its working for you then don't worry about what others think. Also I have my reef octopus in about 7.5 to 8 in of water but mine is the 8in version. Yours might not need to be as deep as mine.
