Was just getting up to go to bed and checked on the tank and noticed hundreds of little white things floating around in the tank that looked like cyclopeeze. I figured maybe a coral spawn but....

I pulled some out with my handy turky baster and put under a magnifying glass and low and behold my pair of coral banded shrimp mated and the female just released the fry into the water.

I wish I had seen this coming, she has looked like she was carrying for months and now bang. I would have loved to try and raise some. But nonetheless exciting. I must be doing something right.:yay:

Thats great! Maybe you can try to scoop some out and put 'em in a plastic container with slow flow from your main. They would need to eat regularly.

Eat what: the only thing I have small is frozen cyclopeeze and these fry are only a tad bit larger than that

Look in the breeders section to see who has rotifers and phyto cultures.
I bet your corals sure are eating good right now though.

I'm guessing this is not the first time for a spawn as I have had them for 9 months now. Just the first time I have been around to catch it. What about making a mesh rearing pen. My Solana has a very large rear compartment that I could probably make use of. It gets some light but nothing heavy and they would get the benefit of eating DT's and such when I feed the corals.

Might work for the next time they spawn.

Especially my sun coral, I cant begin to tell you how much food those two banded shrimp have taken out of its mouths in the past. Now its the corals turn.

I think doing it as a part of your system may polute it too much. Only my opinion. Some guys on here can definitly help you out better than I on raising fry

Ha ha that is funny. Revenge of the sun!

Looks like a good many are settling into the caves in the live rock and they are alive and kicking. maybe if they can get into the little pockets a couple will make it past the sixline and clowns when they wake up in the morning.

Who knows? That's the same type gauntlet they have to survive in the wild. Maybe a few will make it. Good luck!

I have a pair of Golden Banded Coral Shrimp that have spawned as well. I looked in to what it would take to try and raise them and unless you have access to a plankton source and sieve (like the ocean!) it's not easy. Luckily, your fish and corals will be happy. I was actaully using some of my pepermint shrimp larva for food for my other fish larva when I had them. Apparently it also takes a really long time to get the past meta and to settle. There is some good info on the MOFIB site.
