OK so I know suggested temps and salinity norms for SPS coral, been in the hobby for 15yrs. What I want to know from the SPS experts is: What are the highest temps and lowest salinity level they think SPS will survive and flourish in? The reason for asking is, I'm in the process of breaking down my 300 and there are a few SPS I would like to keep after doing so. My situation is I am trying my hand at raising some clowns and their tank's parameters (temp and salinity) will be around 82-84 degrees and 1.018-1.021 salinity. Do we think SPS can handle that high of temp and low salinity?

They would probably be ok with temperature at 82' no higher, I have a feeling salinity that low will do alot of harm over time. No longer thriving, just surviving (albeit probably barily). No expert, just my thoughts.

Yea my thoughts as well I've seen them thrive in the temp. My worries are the salinity because I know 1.021 is usually the bare min for inverts and corals are just that inverts. Technically just confirming.

Well the drop in salinity itself translates to lower concentrations of EVERY trace element the sps are thriving off of. The equivalent of chopping a large chunk out of your calcium concentrations.

agree above!

IMHO, both are on the outer edges of preferred parems which can leave corals more volatile.

Salinity is the issue more so it seems....

Dude! First... Congrats to you and the Mrs. Now you know it won't be healthy to keep cups of salt water on the counter from now on! :D
Secondly, you just set that thing up man. Sorry to hear you will be breaking it down. However, once that baby bounces in, you won't have much time to tend to a tank. Plus, the baby will become your new hobby! My oldest hobby is on his way down from Nashville as I type. :D
Again.. Congrats Nate.. You two will be great!

you probably already know this but the most important thing you can do for yourself with your tank and a new baby is - AUTOMATION...
