OK, here they are. These came out of a rock holding a colony of zooanthids that were looking sick, so I dipped them in an iodine solution. My three questions:
What kind of starfish are they?
Could they have been causing problems with the zooanthid colony?
Should I place them back in the tank?

Many thanks!

It looks like you are hosting it on something that requires a log in,..MSN live? Try photobucket or something like that.

I don't see pics either...

That being said there is a type of asterina starfish that will kill zoanthids. It looks much like an ordinary asterina although darker and will eat film algaes like other asterinas... but when given the opportunity it will kill zoanthids.

Doe this wor? Sorry to be so technically inept!

I have a bunch of these or like them in my sump. They don't eat the zoas they will cause the zoas to close up as they walk across them.

I'm fairly sure they are simply mini brittle stars. They are benefitial. I've got some in my tank and they are simply detrivores. I've nevere seen them with that particular coloration... but that's all they likely are.

Loren,

If you lived relatively close, I'd say c'mon over and take a couple before I put them back in the tank.
