I have a 46 gallon tank that I am debating on whether I should go ahead and start it up now or wait. The tank is currently up stairs in our house and I plan to relocate it to a new addition that is going to be added to our house in January downstairs. So I can't decide if I should start it up now to let it cycle will it is upstairs and then have to move it all downstairs or just wait.

If I were to start it up now I would probably only add oolite and a few pieces of LR and run some powerheads for the cycle. Then drain it into 5 gallon pails remove the rock and leave the oolite as undisturbed as possible with a little bit of water in the bottom of the tank. That all seems like a lot of trouble versus just waiting to set it up in the permanent location but it sure would be nice to get the cycle going and finished...what were you do?

Any reasons I have not thought of as to why it might be a bad idea to move the tank after having set it up?

If you want to start cycling so your ready when the time comes, put all the rock in a rubbermain trash can or bin with powerheads and some stability.

+1 on the stability, love that stuff. Just follow the directions :)

I agree with dawg, its a real hassle to break one down. His suggestion on doing the cycle thing is a good idea and will save you some time. Good luck

+1 this is exactly what im doing in the middle of my move. 100lbs of dry rock with 50lbs of live rock in a 100g rubbermaid. couple of power heads and just let it sit
