So I recently purchased 5x2 oceanic 150g tank from a friend of mine. I am coming from a 28g cube so this is a big upgrade! I originally bought this tank for my wife because she wanted a FOWLR tank. We are still undecided on which way to go with it. I want a reef tank and she wants FOWLR. We will just have to see where it goes! I am open to any suggestions. The only equipment I have so far is an eshopps advance 300 sump and a reef octo skimmer rated for 200 gallons. I am building the stand myself to match my fireplace and am also having a cabinetmaker craft me some doors to match the ones that are in my house. This will be a fun journey!

I am going for a look that is a mix of these 3 pics. The curved panels match my doors in my house in the first pic, I want to match the rosettes and crown moulding from my fireplace. We will see how it turns out!

Yes I know! Any thoughts on lighting? We are going reef because I am ignoring my wife's opinion on how she wants a Fowlr!

Steve, after 47 years of marriage, I will just say this " When mama ain't happy, nobody is happy!" Consider starting the big tank as FOWLR and using your 28 cube to start your reef. I have seen some gorgeous Nano reefs.

BUT...If you insist on being punished by going reef , Lighting is a personal preference. There are great looking reef tanks out there using black box Chinese LEDs, others prefer T5 Fluorescents or high end LEDs. The old gold standard metal halide is a viable option. It depends on what you plan to stock and how you want it to look. I have used them all. Presently, I have G3 Radeon Pros over my system. Love them and they do what I want over this tank. I'm putting together a frag tank that will use a Reef Radiance LED. Good luck with your decision!

BTW...Great looking setup so far!

I am a fan of T5 and Led hybrid setups. I had Reef breeder and t5 and my corals seemed to love it more than when I had just LED. I recently switched to radions as my reefbreeder is only 5 ft and shadowed the ends of my 6 ft tank. It is for sale btw just factory refurbished under warranty by Logan the owner of reefbreeeders. Would work great over your 5ft tank and you would have room to retrofit t5 lighting.

Hey there everyone… So I have an update! We are doing Fowlr on this tank and I'm going to upgrade my nano cube to a larger cube for the bedroom. We have the cabinet doors finished and just got done antique glazing them. Tank should be up in about a month!

Its coming together nicely. Do you plan on running liverock or matrix in the sump? From my experience running a Fowlr... the fish can become territorial with very little liverock or decorations in the display tank. All that will depend on what kind of fowlr you plan on doing...

Hey everyone sorry it's been so long!  The tank has been up and running for about six months.  We stocked a little mappa puffer as a "pup"   he has been in there about 3-4 months and finally we have our fish list and the next 3 on order.  Our puffer is so cool!  My wife named him "P Diddy".  He is so personal and will let you rub amd pet him!  Eric from pure reef helped me finished plumbing my tank and come up with the fish list.  Our next fish are : magnificent foxface, threadfim butterfly and harlequin tusk.   The final two or three are Queen Angel, Annularis angel and possibly humu humu trigger.  I think we are also about to uprade the bedroom biocube to a 60 or 90 cube.   Hope you enjoy!
