Has anyone here had longterm success keeping stingrays in an aquarium? If so could you please share species/tank specs/husbandry etc. I have 30" wide tank I want to be wide enough but I don't think it is. I have no experience just conflicting Internet info. Real World experiences would be greatly appreciated. Thank you.

More info, please. What kind of stingray, the rest of the dimensions of the tank, etc...
I believe stingrays will benefit more from a big footprint than the height of the tank. It is sometimes confusing with the conflicting info from the internet. This may help, or be a good place to start:

Also: some stingrays like cooler water than we are accustomed to providing.

Best of luck...

120" long x 36" tall x 30" wide. Would be happy with whatever would be able to thrive in my tank warm water only. About to aquas cape, so before I do something the eliminates the possibility if one exist, just wanted to ask. I am smart enough to know I don't know :)

Dang, Man... You have a 550+ tank. At 120" long and 30" wide, you shouldn't have an issue. With that size, you could also stand to have a couple of turdukens in there as well. LOL...

Just make sure you do the aquascape to allow for as much floor room as possible, yet still be an effective filter.

Nothing wrong with asking questions. You are doing the right thing by doing so instead of just jumping into it blindly...

You going to QT the ray?

I have a trio of Cortez rays in my 210(1 male, 2 females). Eventually a 210 will be too small. At that point I'll go to an indoor pool.

Saw these in person and all I have to say is...... Bite me. I am so jealous. Would love to sit and watch them all night long.

Where is Auburn GA? What temp is your system? Is it appropriate to keep one in a 30" wide tank with appropiate aquascape permanently? Where did you get yours from and how fast have they grown? I appreciate your feedback thanks.

Auburn Ga is the butt crack between Athens and lawrenceville :)

I keep the temp around 74-80°.... 74-76 in winter, 76-80° in the summer

When they are full grown, their disk can get up to 12", but usually between 8"-10". Mine are between 3.5-5" in diameter. I can't remember what month I got them, but it was early this year... Probably around feb.

I have minimal aqua scaping so that they have plenty of room to swim around. The 210 tank has 7 fish in it: 3 rays, lg male green bird wrasse, yellow coris wrasse, blue regal tang, and a chocolate tang. I do have a few corals and a clam in the tank, as well as two urchins.

I got mine from Bill at the Aviarium.

I'd wait until spring to add the rays. Right now, they are in cooler water and don't always acclimate to the tropical reef temps that we normally keep.

Hope this was helpful...

Thanks for the tips. I would love to come by and see your setup and ask you 100000 questions about everything. Is there aver a good time for that I am pretty flexible. How active are the rays during the lights on periods.

The rays are VERY active during the day. They are really fun creatures to have. They will come to the top of the tank and feed from your hands. There are fish limitations when housing sting rays. I had to trade a moorish idol that was beautiful and ate anything you threw at it, including the rays... no bueno.

No angels, butterflies, moorish idols, triggers, etc... These guys are known to pick on rays.

I'm sure we can work out a time that you can come check them out. The next two weeks are going to be tough for me: lots of work, and I won't be home during normal hours.

How soon are you trying to put this together? Ask as many questions as you'd like, I'm no expert but I'll try to answer the stuff I do know.

Hmmm my poor butterfly and trigger. I'm not really tang crazy and i knew my trigger was likely to be incompatible.........what else is going to be a big swimmer to flesh out the open aquascape? Do you have any recent shots of your tank here with the rays or video? My tank has overflow on one end I intended to hide it with rockwork and possible pillarish structure on the opposite end as well. Do you think 30 wide is enough for an adult size specimen. Otherwise it will be 3 rock structures and a zebra moray. Current stocklist is harlequin tusk, racoon butterfly, niger trigger, midas blenny, flame angel, regal tang, 2 sets of clowns, and a group of chromis. Removing the butterfly and trigger, what could i replace thier activity and color with?

Your fish might not bother the rays, but then again, they may. It's hard to tell. Generally, those types DO bother rays.

I'm a fan of a nice wrasse ;). Maybe a look down? If you are gonna have a huge tank, look downs are awesome.

30" is probably pushing it for full adult size... But it will take a while to get there. I *think* it would be ok for a Cortez ray, and I would fell comfortable putting a few rays in a tank that size.

I need to clean the tank before I post a video. I've been working a lot and slacking at home. I was supposed to do it yesterday, but we had a family emergency with my grandfather... I'll try to get to it tomorrow evening.

Ok thanks for all your help i will research some alternative fish and see what i can come up with. Do you already have the pool/pond setup for your rays? You can pm me when you are gonna be messign around with the tanks and I will try to make it over there.

I don't have the pool yet. It will probably be another year or two before i need it. My guys are still relatively small.

You could probably have some anthias or other schooling fish to fill the open water void.

Here's a pool for the rays, Dylan. Only 7900g though.

I don't think I want to rehouse my trigger. Read a little more and Niger was supposed to be potentially ok with Blue throats and Crosshatch. Also seems 30 wide is bare minimum so that doesnt seem like a good idea either. I dont have sugar fine sand either, I will have black and white aragonite sand. Is that too coarse for their underbelly? That might be the third strike :(. I have small Regal and only other tangs i like are Acanthurus species and they are specifically mentioned as potential eye pickers as well. Lastly, will Chromis, Clowns, or Flame Angel be potential $$$ snacks? If I did put anything in my tank it would be permanent unless there was problem behavior so iI don't want to plan on removing anything later as it would be a nightmare to catch. I do plan to quarentine in a 125g. I don't want to miss out on the opportunity to have a cool ray but I don't want to put it in sub optimal conditions for my please either. If the trigger is not likely to bite its eyes off, and the sand is not too rough, and 30 wide is not cruel for adult size animal, I will see what i can do with acuascape to accomidate one. What do you guys think?
