Store bought water parameters

The parameters will be differant every time you buy remixed salt at the store. If they got their measurements wrong all the parameters are messed up. I would recommend finding a salt mix that matches your tanks parameters and buy it separately and just pick up RODI from store and mix it yourself so its consistent every time.

I had great luck with red sea blue bucket, since it was almost identical to the current parameters at that time. Makes waterchanges super easy once you find the right salt. You can do huge waterchanges and nothing in the tank will be effected/shocked from swinging parameters.

Every LFS uses different salt. I know Premier aquatics in Marietta used Fritz RPM and optimum aquarium in kennesaw uses TM (I think…) and Shaq’s reef in Marietta uses instant ocean... etc… etc…

When I first started this hobby, I was buying both RODI and mixed salt water from the LFS. Once though, they gave me RODI instead of salt water and I dumped it into my 65G Tank at the time. Realized they gave me a wrong water. I think she was just too busy maybe… No harms done but I learned that day it is good investment to get my own…

You also hear the story about their TDS being very high but I think LFS in atlanta are generally reliable~ Probably want to check your water before adding to the tank.

Never add water to an aquarium without checking the parameters. Whether it’s our own or from anywhere else-?

The goal should be to use a salt mix that matches your desired water parameters, then stick with it.

This hobby requires consistency/stability to be successful. The creatures in our care, especially corals, have limited tolerance for changes and will usually show it.

Thanks for the feedback! I definitely understand why doing it myself would be a lot less risky and over all a more perfect method! It’s a work in progress as we speak. The water I’ve been getting has been from only one store that’s very well known on this forum for being of quality, and has been stable across batches, and worked very well to restabilize a little project tank that was thrown off after being moved and reset up. I of course test it each time, which is what lead me to this question. Either way- I’m still curious if anyone else out there has recently tested a local stores water and what it was.
