STRONG Smell...

I am probably being paranoid but I bought an Eshopps (sp?) sump for my new 60 cube. The sponge that fits between the chambers to reduce bubbles has a very strong chemical type smell. Before putting it online I rinsed it in hot water for 10 minutes or so. Even now though when I open the stand doors I get a faint smell of it. I have tested the water in the tank (no fish or corals yet) and everything tests fine. I think I will put one small colony of zoas in there and see how they do before the big change over. Good idea?

I'd soak it in some bleach or vinegar for a few, rinse & let dry. Most likely you're paranoid and it's just the plastic smell but better safe than sorry.

And be careful with the sponges. They collect a LOT of crap which will smell much worse than the chemical smell you've got now.

+1....I got those type sponges in two SeaLife Systems I have used and never used the sponge either time. You need to rinse it off for crud every couple days or it will do more harm than good, IMO, just like filter socks.

The sponge is only there to prevent microbubbles from getting back into the tank. Strategic positioning of the skimmer output can eliminate the need for it altogether.

A good strong garden hose w/ a pressure nozzle cleans them pretty well. I like sponges personally. It may collect detritus yes, but if you clean them regularly its a good way of getting it out. I also run filter socks so mine doesn't get too nasty.
