Sump build vs buy

With being able to build most things I was wondering if it is worth spending the cash on a sump rather that building one from scratch/ already owned tank. If possible I would like some real world experience from some that have done both. What options are out there for filter sock holders if you build your own?

Check this out: https://oceanboxdesigns.com/products/filtration/sump-kits/">https://oceanboxdesigns.com/products/filtration/sump-kits/</a>

Makes DiY a little bit easier. Pieces come pre cut (assuming you pick similar size tank, although I know he does custom) and all you have to do is silicon them in.

If you have a spare tank that will work, use that.

If you actually want to build it from scratch, chances are the glass or acrylic will cost more than just buying a ready made one unless youre making something huge and custom.

My sump is an old used 200g tank I resealed and added baffles and I love it.

I built my last sump.. I'm very happy with it. It took a lot of work... a few set backs... some frustration... but it cost me about $100 and I have everything I want. There was no way I could have bought anything close to what I made.. Period. Anything in the ball park is $400 new. I ordered a skimmz sock and sock holder but considered making my own mounts. The skimmz was cheaper and easier.

I got my acrylic from am member, cheap though....

What size?

There's usually a lot of good deals that come around here, so I'd say to look out for that. Depending on the size, there are reasonably priced sumps available at the lfs, so don't discount looking there. If you're doing it for fun, diy can work. If your time is worth more than the joy of diy, then you won't be saving any money and buying is better.

SIze is a good question, all the one have have been looking at are bigger sized 35+ Gallon. I will have a 90 gallon display. What would be the be a good size for a 9O without a space restriction?

For small sumps like that, you can find lots of really good deals on prefab sumps. I'd get the biggest sump you can fit and afford; I've never regretted a large sump, but have always regretted a small one.
