Sump question

I am starting to migrate from the rubbermaid tube to something more fitting for under my tank. I do have a question about the sumps "input" section.

I see some people run filter socks and others run a rubble section. What are the pros of the rubble section? I do know you have to keep rotating your filter socks every couple of days, but how do you clean the rubble section? Thanks.

So in this application, the LR rubble is no better than bio balls? I guess I will have to weigh the benefits of each and do further research. Thanks.
