what rock is best for adding to a sump, by best i mean most bang for the buck.

i like to used rubble tonga branch, u can get at cap bay for like 2 bucks a pound and it also makes for good frag pieces too

Lava rock is my sump rock of choice. It's more porous than any base rock or live rock you will ever find, and its cheap and readily available.

Perhaps there is. I guess there's an acceptable amount in there if anything since my inverts and corals are all fine and I have at least 3 gallons of lava rock in my sump. From my understanding the ultramafic rocks like lava rock are mostly iron oxide and magnesium oxide. There might be other trace minerals though. If you're concerned you could soak it in some ro/di and test for copper. Or if you're not overly concerned you could throw a bunch in a mesh bag and throw that into your toilet reservoir and let it "cure" so to speak.
