OK, so i came home from a business trip after being gone 3 days while the wife watched the tank. Noticed my Sailfin Tang has white ich spots over her. So its time to treat her in the QT tank. But the QT tank needs a 50 per cent water change first. It is a 30 gallon QT tank , I am running 2 hang on the back carbon filter systems . one is a dual carbon the other is a single. i just removed the filters, got to go to pet store tomorrow after work and get some copper treatment. any suggestions as to what procedures i need to take. My new 160 gallon dt is running a salinity of 1.025, should i use the same salinity in the QT tank ? or lower it to 1.020 and drip acclimate the tang? and do i need to remove my clowns and goby and cardinal and treat them all.

Some will say just feed others say QT.

I say Qt your fish. Not just one but all!

Let it sit fishless for 6 weeks.

Copper works best. Try to match all Params

Thanks PFC, i am not running a UV sterilizer, do I need to in the future? does t help kill the parasites? and will the fish be more stressed in a 30 gallon QT . I have 4 clowns 1 cardinal., 1 goby, 1 lawn mover blenny gonna be a Bit@# catching all of them, right now all the rest are ich free

I Am told to run a UV and I do not as my Bulb is broke and Ive been out of town for weeks now.

Id try to get a Big trash can or another Qt tank.

Try to feed for a few days and if it worsen then try to catch and QT.

Ive lost 90% of my battles with ich. Some say its easy

I'm still debating the whole uv idea because I have had fish get iChat with one and with out one running so I don't know what to think, when my tangs get ich I lower salinity raise temp in the tank slowly and I feed the fish mix of garlic and metrozidosal( prob not how it is spelled ) 4x a day been lucky latley, knock on wood,it has cured all but one fish, an Achilles that didn't make it though the 4th spell of ich. Just my 2 cents idk if it will work for u

What Kris is telling you seems to be the advice I see the most and I think it is sound advice. As for the UV, I would add a clarification. It does kill parasites but, they must be suspended in the water that passes through the UV and it must pass through at a speed that exposes them long enough to kill them. Unless you can figure out a way to get all the water in the tank to pass through it and stay in it long enough, I don't think it will be a huge help. That is why you need the 6 weeks of fallow tank. The life cycle of ich is 4 weeks. If the parasite has released eggs they will hatch in 4 weeks. If there are fish in the tank they will survive and thrive and you will back to square one. If there are no fish in the tank to feed on they will die out from stravation. That is what the extra 2 weeks is for. Some have had success trying other things but I have seen lots of people try to cut back on that time only to have it come back down the road.

Feed 4-5 x a day use Metro & Focus(Seachem)+ Garlic Guard. Do a water change about every four days. Focus makes the Metro stick to the food so the fish will get more Medication. You may want to keep just your actinic on, when your not feeding, to prevent more stress. Hope this helps!:D

This is horrible! a whole year with the 110 setup , no problem, , then after 1 month 3 new fish the Tang gets ich!! and NO i didnt QT the sailfin!! My mistake . I will from now on!! :o

I've never lost an ich battle and all I do is feed 3 small meals a day. But that's just my experience

I got a 75 you can use if you need a bigger qt. You can come get it this evening. I also have a gallon of coppersafe. You can use as much as you like. Call me if interested
Pm sent

formalin is another medication you can treat in QT.

merto/focus could help in the meantime in display.

Thanks John, I might just do that. Woke up this morning and the fish looks almost clean?? I have a 30 gallon ,but if all fish needed to be in a QT then the 75 would be less stress on them. you know i still have my 110 gallon I could setup?? but no skimmer , i traded it . Can you treat fish in a 110 without a skimmer?? and just do weekly water changes?? using copper? and use hang on back filters without the filters? I have a dual and a single , then add a power head?

You don't need a Skimmer on a qt. Use the hang on backs with just floss. No carbon. I have some floss if you just want to cut some pads. I don't think you will need a powerhead but you will need a heater. And some rock or media out of your dt to quick cycle the tank. Whatever you use in the qt as far as media cannot go back in your reef

I also have a Skimmer your welcome to borrow
