I cannot for the life of me unscrew the canisters off to replace the filters on my 4 stage spectrapure RODI. I have had several "strong" friends try as well, and they couldn't either.

I was recommended to buy a universal housing wrench, but I would prefer not to spend money to unscrew a canister if I can avoid it.

Does anyone have any advice on unscrewing them? Or wouldn't mind letting me borrow a wrench, or coming by to help me out :) ?

Thanks!

I used a wrench i got from advanced auto parts to remove oil filters. It is basically a large channel lock wrench.

You need one of these:

Hold the bracket and have some one else tap the canister wrench with a rubber mallet. I had to do that on one mine...

Get or borrow a canister wrench like Jenn posted. They're a heck of a lot cheaper than replacing a canister (and buying a wrench) after you break one.

you can also use a strap wrench. Its a rubber band that tightnens when you "wrench down on something.

Does anyone know if these wrenches can be found at home depot or other home improvement stores?

SmallBlock- I actually tried it with a rubber strap wrench, it still didn't come off :( The top of the unit is sort of flimsy, so it is hard to keep the unit straight while putting enough pressure to turn it to the left (and not break it)

haha I had a 250lb man who can certainly carry his weight attempt. It is going to take the GOVERNATOR for this job.

I have a cannister wrench in Alphareeta off Exit 11 if you want to borrow it.

if it's that tight, you may want to tap GENTLY on the canister while pulling on the cannister wrench. Sounds like it's been a while.

Yeah, I bought it used from a member on here and it looks like things definitely need a good cleaning / new filters.

I appreciate the help and advice everyone! This is my first time not having to buy water from the LFS. No more nano convenience!

A member on here (Joe) invited me over, and spent over an hour helping me get the canister off (it took two wrenches and lots of man power). Finally, we got them off.

Joe was incredibly knowledgable and gave up his time / resources to help me out and I will never forget it. This hobby can be extremely difficult, but knowing a club like this exists with lots of good people willing to help out like that is very encouraging. I am forever indebted to Joe and I cannot wait to help out fellow reefers once my knowledge and experience becomes worthy of being passed on.

Thanks again everyone! Whoever needs help in the Alpharetta area or just wants to hang out and talk fish / show off their tank.... count me in!
