Hey guys, I found something I think I can use for my tank stand, but im just double checking. It's 66x22x51. The tank is 36x24x18. Im just wondering if it's ok for the tank to be 2" wider than the base?

That would be a no-go in my book. The tank should be fully supported. This is especially true for glass.

:( alright. Cant seem to find anything to fit this one as it's oddly shaped. Looks like I need to contact a carpenter

A lot of people build their own stands. @ZapataInc is making his own right now and they look pretty sweet. That’s an option for you.

Well... I don’t like this idea, but there is another alternative in which you would be able to use the same stand.

Basically, get a slab of wood (I’d use something stronger than plywood) that is flat and large enough to cover the whole tank bottom. And sandwich this between the stand and the tank (assuming the stand has a flat surface). This way, the whole tank would be supported by a rigid structure, the wood plank. The risk that you are trying to avoid is that you don’t want this wood to flex at all over those final 2” overhang. That could cause uneven stress on the tank and cause catastrophic failure.

I agree, but... friendly amendment: I would definitely use plywood. This sounds like a 75 gallon tank, so... At least 2 layers (3 would be better) of high grade 3/4”, Baltic Birch if you can find/afford it. Maybe sandwich some MDF in there for extra rigidity. You will want to seal it really well (several layers of polyurethane or even spar varnish).

Solid wood, especially near moisture, is absolutely going to warp over time and pop your tank. Plywood is designed not to warp, but it really doesn’t like getting wet : )

I don’t know what your aesthetic/budget is like, but you could also put a thick slab of granite down, or do a concrete countertop kind of thing.

Just my $0.02...
