Tank Supported By a Wall?

I would like to put a couple of 20G high tanks near the ceiling attached to the wall studs in the basement. The total weight would be about 175lbs. Has anyone done this? Any ideas on how to make a shelf to hold this kind of weight with no worries?

Anchoring the shelves to the wall will not be sufficient to hold the weight. You will also need to support the outer edge of the shelves by connecting them to the studs in the ceiling.

I anchored my upper shelve corners in the basement via threaded rods. See pics.

Very nice! Are the rods from HD or Lowes? How did you do it? What size rods? Drill holes through the 4" side of the 2"x4" and use big washers and nuts? Did you coat them with anything so they wouldn't rust?

Thanks, have you seen any in particular at HD or Lowes? What would they be made of, I don't want anything that might rust?

They are aluminum but come painted

I respectfully disagree. My 30g reef was wall mounted in college to the fraternity house studs. It just has to be done right.

Go with 3/4" plywood, cut into triangles and sized as needed, and you'll be fine. No overhead (cables/threaded rods) necessary. Just be sure to attach the plywood brackets directly into the stud faces (not the edge) with bolts, nuts & washers.

And when all else fails RedEdge can whip up anything in sketchup in under 10 minutes. So so so much better than trying to explain in words. Well done again Guru of DIY. When I get the rest of my house situated and am ready to do my in wall (months from now) I think I will be calling on you for your help in plan and design at the very least.
