About 6 months ago we moved into our new house. Everything was moved over and was doing extremely well. I am one to push for pristine water conditions and have been successful doing so. About 2+ months ago I started developing a small algae problem (very small). It did not get out of control but it kept popping up. I also started getting a bit of bubble algae. shortly after that I started getting a cyano. I increased flow and cut back on lighting and feeding but it still was existing and occuring on a regular basis even if vaccumed. I was doing a 1/6th water change every week so I inceased it trying to deter the problem. Still no luck. My corals were then starting to brown out but still had full PE. I started looking for other culprits and at last, I discovered that over a period of time my bubbles in my skimmer had decreased but still bubbling. I made some adjustments and bam....mega bubbles less than a minute later. It was happening right in front of me and I did not realize since it was happening so slow. (this was not due to a dirty skimmer BTW). This was two weeks ago when I discovered the problem. I now have coloring coming back strong and algae is almost gone. Cyano has disappeared and lighting has been extended.

First I am glad that I keep up with my water changes but second, this was good proof of how important a skimmer is to systems. When someone says they will bypass the skimmer, I would be the first one to say don't.

Just a little tale that I thought I would share with a happy ending.

thats good you found the problem. Ive never had a problem like that but just seeing the nasty stuff my skimmer pulls out, I dont think I will ever run a tank without one.

+1 to keeping it clean. Please note my situation was not caused by a dirty unit. It was mechanical and easily unnoticable. I'm real big on the vinegar clean but please be aware that I have heard that vinegar will ruin seals on the Koralias and can cause stray voltage and shorts. Since I have heard that I have stopped soaking my Koralias.

I think that is exactly why they were invented
