I recently changed out my bulbs and ignoring the awesome new color in my tank I am also getting a significant increase in red slime algae. I turned off my lights for a couple of days and that did wonders to clean it up, but now that they are back on I can see that I am headed back down the same path. So...
- Should I reduce my photo period or is that really just a band-aid for the problem? I currently run PCs on ~12 hours, MH on ~7.5 hours.
- Does running carbon help eradicate?
- Is there anything else I should try?
My water params are good now. I did have a relatively high nitrate level about 3-4 weeks ago, but got it back down. If that spike (plus the lights) started this then if I keep them low will it go away or is it one of those things that once it gets started it is hard to get rid of?
Thanks for any suggestions.
