I want to get a blue dot jawfish but they are pretty expensive. Are they hardy fish and if anyone has one are they hard to care for??

never had one bc i new to saltwater but i heard they are hard to keep alive

Some people say they are, but that's why I bought mine from liveaquaria since they offer a two week guarantee. In terms of keeping them, you need to offer loads of rubble for them to construct a house, and tops on your tank is a must since they are jumpers. I haven't ever had any issues with mine and has been eating like a piggy since day 1, oh and I target feed mine right by his little home. They usually set up fort right in the front of the tank so they can view everything. Coolest little fish I've ever had the pleasure of caring for. Had him for about 2 months now.

Nah he won't cover them, the only thing I could see him doing is actually using them as a part of his house. He constantly takes frags of my frag rack and uses them as his front door.

Yeah hopefully they don't play the game of "bury the corals" like that goby does in our coral table!!!

Lol I want one now ha and okay I might take you up on some help

I did! And thats grwat to hear! I thought I did reply, but now I don't see it in my sent folder. But yes everyday should be fine. Make sure though you test/check the params. I also found this thread on a forum based in South Africa that actually set up a tank to grow nuisance algae & what not just to test the effectiveness of the NO3:PO4-X. They had great results and included pictures! Read through as much of the thread as you can!

They require a much lower temperature. I highly suggest you go with a pearly or tiger jawfish!!! And yes, they are jumpers.

What other tankmates do you have? Just a heads up that other burrowing fish or fish with similar body structure may not get along well with it...

My starry blenny obliterated mine. It literally sat by his burrow, and attacked it everytime it poked it's head out...

+1 on the pearly or tiger jawfish advice...

Dang I was going to set up a tank for a pair! No other guys but Im leaning more towards an angler or leaf fish now.

^^^ What he said. They are collected from deeper, colder water, and develop problems in warmer tanks and wither away. They are VERY difficult to keep happy if your water is 77 degrees or above. I've never had any luck, and neither have any of my customers. They are gorgeous, but IMO they are one of those specimen "best left in the ocean."

If you want a jawfish, I suggest a pearly. They fair better with changing wayer temps and are just as cool. Blue spots are jumpers and are very timid, you would have to hand feed it everyday. I k ow this from experience. I kept one alive for six months before it took the death jump.

I had a blue spot for about a year and kept tank temp at 78.5 and i had no problems with it. Well until i went on vacation for a week and the person tank sitting turned the AC off in the house which raised the tank temp a lot...so i came home to a dead tank!

Was one of my favourite fish and will definately get another down the road.

I have a blue spot at just over a year so far and going strong. Tank is at 78d. Very active and definitely my coolest fish. He is always remodeling his hole and will drag live hermits and snails to cover the entrance. Sometimes he will grab a frag from the other side of the tank and use it like "lawn art".

My first one in a previous tank years ago lasted for 3 years. My roommate left the canopy open and he jumped. That tank was about 80d and he did great.

I got one two weeks ago at nemos he is great except he digs up my sand bed and aggravates my yellow watchmen
