I have a major love of aquatics , I have many fresh water tanks , three koi ponds and now I want to step up to salt. I would like to start out small , maybe one of my 20 or 40 gallons. Any pointers on how to start out and maybe pointers on whats going to give me lots of color , but price easy as being a newbie to salt as to not kill lots of money.

Welcome to ARC. Lot's of valuable information may be obtained here. The best thing is to go slow, read and read some more. Research is invaluable. Remember, the faster you go, the harder the crash so patience is key. Ask questions and you will receive a lot of answers. There is no real "budget" tank since this hobby is definately not cheap but doing it right and purchasing equipment used can keep cost down.

Good luck

My advice is to get: The Conscientious Marine Aquarist and read it cover to cover. It covers all the basics. ARC members will help but this is the best place to start.

He did an excellent job in this thread

Thank you for all the info, I love the looks of a salt tank , after over 20 years in freshwater I think its time to brave up and take the plunge. Looking at some of the tanks here they are simply amazing. I do have several pieces of what use to be live rock, could I use that even though its no longer live ?

yes you can you just have to cycle it, meaning you cant add anything to the tank for a month there should be info on that in the thread I gave you. WELCOME to the greatest money pit on earth

LOL oh my , is it gonna be more costly than my discus and my show koi if so o my......... I do have some items already on the list that I have gotten when buying in lots.

+1

Biggest regret for me was buying the wrong equipment...over and over and over again!

Welcome! I have also made the transition from fresh water to salt, and it has been very rewarding! Start SLOW and read everything that you can before starting the tank... there is a ton of information out there, and the ARC is an AWESOME resource for getting answers

I went the other day and picked up two aquariums a 125 and a 100 gallon , was not in the market for more but when I got the pair for 100 I could not pass them up. The 125 is freshwater , the 100 is acrylic and drilled through the bottom , plumbing already in place ( my first drilled ) should I just set this one up as a reef tank or should I start out smaller ? I already have a protien skimmer it was one of those things I got when I bought in lots. I also have a few other items but no lights or filter system. I am in the process of relocating from Al. To Ga. already have tanks set up at my mothers house until we buy a place, can I go ahead and start the setup process or do I need to wait ? I know the dead live rock I have is over 100 pounds. I know I will wait on fish until we move but would like to start getting all the other stuff in the tank if you all think its ok.

i would wait too if your moving its gonna be hell moving that 125G tank

I concur with the wait...but you can still keep combing the boards for great deals on gear. Start piecing together a nice system on the cheap, and set it up after the move...then it is a whole nother waiting game.

I learned about all the saltwater information on youtube when I first got into the hobby! I saw go with a bigger system! It's easier to handle; my first reef was a 26 gallon. I had a terrible time with it!

Not going all used , just got some items when buying at auctions for my fresh water setups, so when going through the items realized that stuff was there to. I sold my 125 that I had in AL a few weeks ago because I did not want to move it , then saw these on the aquarium form and when I could get them for 50 dollars each I grabbed lol. Then I got to thinking when I saw his huge salt set up that I want to try my hand at it.I think I will go with the 100 gallon and start searching out the equipment like you all said.I think I have two powerheads should I get more of those as well and what lighting should I look at.Since I have never done a sump on a tank is this the way to go , or a different type of filtering ?

Welcome! I'm new here but the people are great at answering questions, and kudos for doing research first!

Would love pics of the Discus and/or Koi - always love pics! :-)

Sure here are a couple of Discus pictures

Edit: And a few of my koi from the 10k gallon
