Has anyone used the Titanium Heater with
Controller by Won Brothers?
I'm setting up a new sw tank.
I will heat in my sump so do I put the sensor in my main tank?

thanks for any help.

No experince with that one. I have an Azoo titanium 50w, but it doesn't have a separate sensor. I think it's within the titanium casing.

My advice is buy two quality heaters and avoid the cheap stuff. Pick a size that won't boil your tank if it screws up, but big enough to keep the tank about 74 for a short time in case one fails. I use 2x200w VisiTherm Stealths on my 120. Niether is enough to boil the tank over night and one can limp the tank along for quite some time.

hey phil,

If you're looking for heaters, you may want to read this article... :)

hth,

Thanks guys.
Cameron you make good sense.
Matt I will read the info from the link.
I was going Jager but I may have to re-think.

Thank you for the info. :)

The heater I have for my 72 bowfront is the Via Aqua 300 Watt titanium model:

So far it's done a great job, holding the temp very constant. One great feature about it is that it's very fine-tunable, and 79 degrees on the dial results in 79 degrees in the tank. VisaTherm Stealths are really great, too. I have one in my nano and use another for mixing saltwater.

Yeah, I'm willing to bet that most of us who've been in this hobby for any considerable amount of time knows what that feels like! I think we should take a poll to see how many of us have been electrocuted (and how many times!)

I don't have any personal experience with this, but I've read a number of reports of batches of the Won Titaniums actually corroding in saltwater.
I think for a while they were getting bad batches of titanium or lesser alloys.
Perhaps they've upped their quality control since then, but I wouldn't bet my tank on it.

Personally I'd stear clear of anything metal that will be submersed for long periods, with the exception of a titanium ground probe. Either Stealths or Theos would be my choice. I've read recent posts of bad quality control on the Stealths: with internal seals leaking, superheating the internal saltwater, and the steam eventually blowing the temp dials off and frying the tank. No personal experience with this problem... yet.
If it can happen- it's gonna happen to me.

A seperate temperature controller, single stage is fine, (unless you forsee adding a chiller in the near future, then a dual stage is the way to go ) is a good idea. Especially since the temp dials on the Stealths are good for a "ballpark" temp at best.

You should measure the temperature in the display tank, preferably in the middle of the back. The surface can be warmer due to heat from the lights.

Haven't used Won. Stay away from Finnex, they are absolute garbage! Jager are excellent.

Since I'm getting the AC jr next month, I've been thinking about buying just a heater by itself (with no controller). Specifically, I've been looking for titantium heaters because my Won heater has worked pretty well.

In that case, is a heater-only Finnex a bad choice? I've been looking at this one:

Or this one:

Thanks,

Cheap or not cheap. 3 important things you should always do.

Make sure you have a ground fault interupter at the outlet of the heater.
Make sure it's on a independent, expensive/fancy temp controller.
Make sure you have a chiller, lol.

I recommend buying a decent heater with a temp controller. Last thing you want to happen is the temp probe to malfunction or get pulled out of the sump and boil the tank. I use my AC to turn the heaters on/off, but I use the heater thermostat as a safety control set at 82. I normally keep the tank at 78.

I had both the titanium tube and the controller go out, so I can't really brag about either piece. The customer service from the Finnex rep was terrible. I would never buy or reccomend this brand for that reason alone. You want service after the sale, and you will not get that from Finnex.

Also, I like having the redundancy factor of using a controller with a controlled heater. If the ac jr screws up, the the heater controller will regulate, and vice versa.
