I’m setting up a 40 breeder and am working on the fish I want to stock. I’m trying to focus on utilitarian fish and am looking for a fish to help control algae. Everything I hear is tangs tangs tangs. My question is will a Tomini thrive in a 40 breeder? It will have corals and other fish with it. I’m not so worried about bioload I’m just worried if it will have enough space. I keep reading that Tominis are smaller and grow slow. I’m not completely against trading it In for a smaller one when it gets to big. What’s the consensus or is there an alternative algae destroyer that would be a better fit to the tank? I also already have a tail spot blenny that will be transferring to the tank.

I personally would recommend at least a 48" long tank for a Tomini. Tangs, and some other fish, really like long straightaways for swimming. (Unlike blennies, gobies, wrasses, and other fish that spend more time hovering)

A 40g isnt obscenely small.

(But you probably wont need a Tomini to control algae if you have any of the algae blennies in there.

Edit: Nevermind, missed the tailspot. They def wont get along. )

Got ya. I didn’t think about the tang and blenny not getting along. I was I initially planning for a 75 but I don’t have room for it in my house so the 40 it is.

Sorry for the ambiguity. I meant the tailspot wouldnt get along with any of the algae blennies (lawnmower, starry...)

The tailspot would generally be fine with the Tomini.

I have a kole Tang in my 40 breeder. He's only about 2 in long. I've had him for a few months now. That being said, there will be either an upgrade in the future or a rehome in the future. If you do go with a Tang they're going to have to be a small one like mine. Which they're going to be even more fragile. I would not recommend it unless you've been keeping tanks for a good amount of time. And always always see them eat before you buy. If they don't eat, pass.

Thanks for the advice! I was thinking a Tomini since they are supposed to stay the smallest

Yes he has the smallest kole tang I’ve ever seen

I would not get a tang for a 40. Also, I would focus less on algae control. Sure, a blenny might be nice. But my tangs won't touch hair algae. You can control algae other ways (mostly it requires getting your tank up and running for 2+ years).

The only "utilitarian" fish decision that has ever been worth it to me is a filefish for aiptasia control. Filefish FTW.

Everyone seems to forget you can always bring a fish back to the store for trade or just sell it.

I had 5 tangs in a 58g (36x18x21) for years. Granted the tang team was rotated out about every 2-3 years as they grew. Id bring them back to the LFS and trade them out for smaller ones and some coral. For a 36" tank Id go for a size range of 1.5"-4". Thats about the size of a quarter up to your palm. When buying tiny tangs make sure they eat aggressively and they will be great.

Just be ready for an onslaught of tang police screaming about a 12" tang not being able to turn around in such a small tank and wah wah wah. Not every fish has to be a permanent resident.

That was my general idea if I get a tang. My lfs will exchange then once they get too big for my tank

Against the grain here but I think a Tomini or other bristletooth would be fine in a 40breeder. They, in my experience, behave more like wrasse than the other tang species. They weave in and out of the rock more than cruising and picking like sailfin, scopas, and acan. species. As long as the rock has passages it'll be good to go.
