Not at all, typically though I try to keep 3-4" of space on the side for cleaning coral growth. I really like your layout.
 
My PERSONAL opinion is yes,

BUT, do what makes ya feel good :) Thats some pretty dense rock, so it will be hard to make it work without just stacking it... good look though...

I do actually like it for what its worth :)

I made this rockwork KNOWING that if have to shift it around for SOMETHing one day. Everything is modular.

How big is the tank? I feel limited for stuff like "islands" in 40g. And thank all of you
