hiya all i have a question. i have been checking everyones tanks out and they are awsome. but i have noticed some people have trigger fish in there reefs. i was always told triggers would tear my corals to shreads. is there reef safe trigger fish. if so i would love to know. the trigger fish:thumbs: are one of my favorite fish.

Niger Triggers are reef safe aren't they? I'm not much of a trigger fan so I'm not sure

Blue jaw, pink tail, crosshatch; just to name a few

According to Scott Michael's Marine Fishes book, these are the sort of reef safe triggers:

niger (may nip at things)

pinktail (melichtys vidua)

bluechin (xanthichthys auromarginatus)

crosshatch (xanthichthys mento)

sargassum (xanthichthys ringens)

I can vouch for my pair of blue jaw triggers.

i got them from http://www.bluezooaquatics.com">www.bluezooaquatics.com

keep in mind its always a gamble with triggers... kinda like some small angels that ppl keep. That big beak on the front... it's there for a reason.

There concerned not to be reef safe because they eat small inverts...and some eat small fish. If you dont care about your crabs and snails being picked off one by one, then your good to go... I personally love triggers and will always have atleast one in my tanks.

Niger or a Blue Jaw would give you the best chance at having one but like everyone said, there are no gaurantees with these guys. I really want a blue jaw myself.

I have a pink tail that is very happy to be in my reef tank. Never nips at anything.

awsome that makes me soo happy i love the niger trigger . i have had to in my life time but not in the reef. ill have to try one my coralbanded shrimp is huge so maybe he will be ok. ill have to get a small one .thanks guys and gals for busting an old myth.

Niger Trigger will wipe out your CBS.... Its a safe bet... maybe not the first day or first week but eventually...... I have had three Niger Triggers since I started keeping tanks and they have all terrorized the smaller tank inhabitants at some point..

man i just checked out the blue jaw that is killer man i might have to go for a small one of them. there is just so many awsome things that you can put in a reef it just blows my mind . thats why i love reefing soo much. lol

yep is the blue jaw trigger the sargassum or is that a different trigger. thanks dawgdude i will have to watch it very carfully. but i will not get anymore stuff till tank is complete . the wetdry/requim/sump is almost done . then im trying to work out the financing of the lights . hopefully 4 250w se mh units. then ill add the last fish in the tank. but i will research the triggers to find the safest and nicest one i like.

However some people also claim that they fed the heck out of it and they still see it chasing their inverts. I have seen blue jaws be the least aggressive though.

This reminded me of 'an experiment' I tried once. I had a smaller volitan lion with several other fish, and thought if I fed the lion he wouldn't go after a skunk cleaner shrimp I wanted to add. So, I fed the lion about 6 guppies, then added the shrimp after the lights went out. That lion nailed the shrimp before he even touched the bottom! I didn't even get my hand on the net first. Chalk that up to being outsmarted by a fish! I swear that lion smiled at me too! lol

Can you say, 'kiss $18 by-by'...

the only inverts i have are a cbs a pepermint shrimp, 2 green matrix crabs and about 45 blue and red leg hermits.

All are beautiful, but this is awesome, IMO!

These are 2 different fish though they are very similar in appearance.
