As a part of my environmental class we have began to participate in a very cool program called Trout in the Classroom.
Starting with eggs students raise, then release the young Trout into a local river/stream. This program is designed to teach kids about Trout biology, environmental responsibility, water testing, and much more.
At my school we are going a step further by taking the information we gain over the course and compiling it into various lessons that we can then take and share with the younger grades. These projects we're working on include things like Trout anatomy, life cycles, tank matinence, the importance of Trout in the ecosystem etc.
Why couldn't we set up a program like this for coral and reef ecosystems. I feel like since we're not on the coast the importance of the reefs is a neglected subject in our traditional education system. It's hands on projects like this that really inspire learning.
