I've been following the UV discussion surrounding the use of LED lighting for our reef tanks. To be honest, the theory that UV is necessary to promote good color in our corals is pretty strong. However, I don't yet understand why some people have great results without the use of UV.

While reflecting on this debate, I came across another idea that I think is worth discussing, or at least bringing to our attention, and it goes like this...

The use of UV sterilizers is a widely accepted practice. The theory is that the UV light kills certain undesirables that are floating around in the water column. My question is this... If we are running light fixtures that emit little to no UV light, are we increasing our tank's exposure to diseases, algea, etc.?

Same spectrum, different intensity, wattage...... I think the "light human skin turning tan in sunlight" analogy is the one I put the most stock in, but whoreally know?
