So I have a question. I am thinking about upgrading to a larger tank. Do I have to do a new cycle for the new tank if Im going to use everything that I have in the current tank and just transfer it to the larger tank?

Depends on the size of the upgrade and what sort of additional rock you choose to add. If you use establish rock from your current tank, it won't take a long time for the existing good bacteria to spread into your new system.

I recently did this with very little cycle. I used a bit of Seed, bought established live rock to add to my existing rock, and added a new substrate to avoid stirring nitrates buried in my sand bed. I also added existing ceramic bio media to my new tank from my old. I would add new sand/substrate and don't reuse the old water.

Expect some cycle and monitor it closely.

I'm planning on adding some more dry rock but add about 40lbs of live sand.

Right now I have a 40gal AIO. I want to go up to a 75 Gal with a sump that im going to build out of a 29gal aqueon tank.

Ok so that’s a substantial upgrade at 165% over your current set up. My guess is that yes you will have a cycle to contend with. Using everything from the current set up including the filter media will help but I would also consider adding nitrifying bacteria such as Bio spira. That should help minimize the cycle.

A bigger concern will be moving the sand bed, how long was the 40 set up for?

I personally had it up and running for about 3 months but the guy I got the whole system from had it running for 6 months.

So with me being a newbie. I was thinking that it would still be the same bioload bc I would not try and add any more stuff for about a month. So I would already have enough bacterial in what I currently have. Unless that gets diluted with more water.

For the most part is is pretty equal but in my experience ther is always some bacteria die off. The sand bed will most likely be a mess unless your doing somewhat a decent job vacuuming it regularly. Moving the sand bed might be more trouble than it’s worth. Ever consider going bare bottom?

As for adding dry rock, make sure it’s clean, any organic material within the to will certainly add to a cycle.

Best of luck, keep us posted along the way!

Get the right sized bottle of this, follow the directions and you’re done-
