So I have a question. I am thinking about upgrading to a larger tank. Do I have to do a new cycle for the new tank if Im going to use everything that I have in the current tank and just transfer it to the larger tank?
I'm planning on adding some more dry rock but add about 40lbs of live sand.Depends on the size of the upgrade and what sort of additional rock you choose to add. If you use establish rock from your current tank, it won't take a long time for the existing good bacteria to spread into your new system.
I recently did this with very little cycle. I used a bit of Seed, bought established live rock to add to my existing rock, and added a new substrate to avoid stirring nitrates buried in my sand bed. I also added existing ceramic bio media to my new tank from my old. I would add new sand/substrate and don't reuse the old water.
Expect some cycle and monitor it closely.
I personally had it up and running for about 3 months but the guy I got the whole system from had it running for 6 months.Ok so that’s a substantial upgrade at 165% over your current set up. My guess is that yes you will have a cycle to contend with. Using everything from the current set up including the filter media will help but I would also consider adding nitrifying bacteria such as Bio spira. That should help minimize the cycle.
A bigger concern will be moving the sand bed, how long was the 40 set up for?
Someone on here said that they were looking for a 40gal AIO so I told them that I would sell it to them. I haven't heard back from them. What are your plans for the 40-gal once you upgrade?
Ok if I don't hear back from him in the next few days I'll DM you.I may be interested if he doesn't get back to you
