Knowing many of you club members and your tank mates, many seem to share the Chromis fish in our reef tank. The Chromis species is particularly susceptible to Uronema marinum parisite, hence I felt this information and experience noteworthy to share.

Uronema marinum is a parasite that lives freely in the marine environment and attacks weakened fish. The appearance of the fish becomes discolored, scales yellow with holes and patches. This disease attacks the organs and muscles of the fish and prove to be fatal quickly.

Uronema marinum parisite can often be avoided by doing freshwater dips on new fish. Freshwater dips are done successfully on less sensitive fish. Place fish in fresh water with similar temperature for 2 to 3 minutes (until fish show signs of stress). This kills the parasites on the fish prior to adding to your QT.
If parasite is suspected or has been discovered there are several medications as well as antibiotics that can be used in the freshwater dip for improved aftereffect.

I highly recommend freshwater dips prior to adding the Chromis species fish to your QT.

A useful time worthy read on treatment of new fish, thanks Luke.
