violet leds

Has anyone added violet leds to their plainblue/white fixture and noticed a real difference in coral colors?

I saw a tank while on vacation last year that had them. The shop builds custom led fixtures. They had tanks side by side, one with blue/white the other had violets added. I saw a subtle but noticeable pop with the violet LEDs. I ordered 12 violet 3 red and 3 green LEDs to add to my fixture. I figured that since most of the newer fixtures are adding colors it can't hurt.

How did you ad the reds in the mm don't they require much lower voltage?

Depending on which power supply you have in the MM fixture it might not be over driving your red leds. If you have the ones that can dim the leds chances are you are not over driving the leds and your reds should last as long as all others last. If one of the original ones than you are probably just lucky so far!

I wonder if there is a noticeable difference in color or if there is just a placebo effect? I also wonder if there is any research in the additional spectrum helping with color and growth in corals?
Just seems like a way to charge more for the LEDs.

I have a dimmable 120 watt 50/50 fixture that I've been really wanting to add green and reds to. From the little I've read, it seems like it would be a much bigger project than replacing the bulbs.

Are you guys suggesting that because I have a dimmable unit, I can simply switch out the bulbs with red and green? - like Barry did?

Also is there a way to add a digital dimmer to a fixture that has the manual dimmers already?

Edit: Found some 3ups with red green and blue on one star for 6.88 , I might add one front and rear angled in and power them seperate from the main fixture that way i can fine tune them.

Edit: Maybe throw a few violets in the main fixture.

Didn't say that but it is possible just depends on the type of drivers that are installed in your fixtures. Some put out a max voltage all the time which will overdrive the red's and some only put out voltage and is basically based on what the led's need so they only drive them at the recommended amounts. You can put red's in any fixture just some get lucky and they last and some don't but as cheap as 3 watt leds are now days does it really matter!!!

You are also not replacing the bulb you will be de-soldering the current led and replacing it with another that you solder back into fixture.

Edit: Colors are hard to tell with cellphones or iPads though I guess.

This is my set up I have 15 cw Cree xt-e 15 rb Cree xt-e 4 b Cree 3w 2uv 3w and 4 ocean white pucks that have a red green and a blue but look white to the eye.
