What are HID Lights?

Anyone have any experience with these?
 
Marine Fish used to have one of those fixtures in stock. Seemed to be very well build and study. Obviously very expensive. But, it was neat as the pods had some very limited movement, so as it says, you could kinda 'spotlight' corals,.

I'm not really sure why HID hasn't caught on in the (USA) industry. Must be some reason...

BTW&lt; for the avid DIY'er, if you did want HID, you can get the ballasts and starters for fairly cheap (as car parts; new or used off of wrecked luxury cars) and then you might fab up your own design.
 
$700 for the 48" fixture. No more expensive than MH/T-5 combos. What about efficiency and heat from the HID?
 
AquaticLife is about the only company in the US selling these right now. No choice in bulb spectrums, and I don't know if theses lights are really full spread or not. You're stuck with their 10K lamps. They are marketed really as spotlights to light only parts of the tank. I guess you could have SPS in certain spots and use these.
