What fans in my canopy.

Im setting up my 120g the canopy is 16" with open back . Im going to run 2-250w radium with LME reflectors and Galaxy dual 250w ballast.My sump is downstairs and is a 100 gallon Rubbermaid.Wondering what and how many fans to run. Im trying to find something really quiet .

Yup, I picked up 10 computer fans from Newegg.com for $14 shipped (there was a price break at a quantity of 10 and free s/h on orders over $10 at the time). I use 8 for my canopy. Has no problem keeping my halides and VHO's cool.

Nice. I'm doing a build and putting in fans now. How do you power the computer fans? Do you use a computer power supply, or use some other type of transformer?

I used http://www.coolerguys.com">www.coolerguys.com</a> they have the 12v power supplies also... (their 120mm fans move about 45 CFM/each and are completely silent... )

Yeah, I had a couple 12v power supplies laying around. I currently run them all on/all off, but would like to have another power supply hooked up and controlled. That way, at first only 4 turn on, if the temp keeps rising, the other 4 turn on.

If you have a sump downstairs, I would consider putting a big fan there. Why put in the canopy? The objective is the same, evaporate water.
I'm in the same predicament myself. My canopy has 2 built in fans but they are very loud. I want to save on the noise factor...

I thought the idea was to keep fans blowing to help move th heated air out. If putting a big fan on my sump is all I need That would be perfect.

if you're trying to cool the tank, then a large fan over the sump is ideal. Since you canopy has an open back, you don't need fans for ventilation; no point adding them to the canopy.

I used a fan from a 50" plasma TV. So very quiet and are $39 at a tv parts site. Its really wide - about 14" so it moves a ton of air. I don't even know its on

Im a believer of a big fan on the sump...worked like a champ on my 90

I have a 6" fan on my sump, and 2x5" AC fans from radio shack in my canopy. Easy to power, just add a power cord and go. They aren't too bad on noise and move much more air than computer fans. But I agree, a large sump fan would be just fine.

In my situation I need to put some fans in my canopy, with it closed my light builds a ton of heat. 12V power supply available at Frys, or Radio shack should work just find. Just make sure it supports enough amperage to run your fans. If you are looking to get evap. cooling then a big one on the sump should suffice.
